Candidate groups
Four candidate groups for center line buffer locations in Texas, all shown on the map: the RHiNO candidate pool screened by roadway type and by the buffer width the existing pavement could hold; a statewide first-cut list of 395 control-section groups, 250 of them reviewed in aerial imagery; 25 four-lane sites with a 4 ft painted center buffer (4M) identified by imagery review; and the 100 demo sites that were imaged and analyzed. Buffers of 18 in and wider are in scope; TxDOT's standard sheets define 36, 42, and 48 in wide buffers.

RHiNO candidate pool by roadway type and buffer room
Room is the pavement width left after the through lanes: (surface width − lanes × lane width) × 12, from RHiNO 2024. RHiNO codes widths in whole feet, so the classes fall at 24, 36, and 48 in. This is a screening heuristic on inventory data; it says where a buffer could fit, not where one is painted. Toggle these groups on the map from Settings.

Statewide first cut, reviewed in aerial imagery
– control-section groups (– mi, – districts) where RHiNO paved width minus the through lanes leaves at least 4 ft. – were reviewed in aerial imagery: the reviewer recorded whether a buffer is visible, its apparent width in whole feet, lane count, rumble strips, continuous left-turn lanes, imagery age, and the period in which the marking appeared. Apparent widths are coarse aerial readings that probably span the outside of both lines; they are not comparable to the tool's inch measurements. Rows marked old or blurry imagery (– of the confirmed) are weaker evidence. This is the first imagery-confirmed set wider than the reference sites: – confirmed segments read 3 ft or more.
